 What Does Money Really Have To Do With it? It's well known that teachers and schools don't get the proper funding needed to do the things we want for our students. In the article it said that the add-on weights for the students who need more support haven't been updated since 1984 and that they should be doubled or more. This is upsetting to me because students that need more help should get the proper funding for the accommodations they need. It surprised how the different school districts with different property tax incomes effects the different schools around them. The schools that make the most money and have the least amount of students make out the best and the lower-level schools don't get enough money and they struggle. It's unfair for those schools and the students in them because they get less opportunities and don't get the proper tools to learn. Is Schooling Equitable? I just want to start this off by saying that this was my favorite module, I really learned a lot and absolutely loved the TedTalks.  The topic over examining disparities in education and systemic racism was amazing. This is a very important topic to talk about that isn't addressed enough. Is schooling equitable; the answer is no it's absolutely not. This goes along with our past module about not getting the full picture. In the TedTalk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie she said that her discovery of African writers saved her from having a single story of what books are. This is a good example of why in schools everywhere we should educate our students in a culturally sensitive way about other cultures and perspectives.   Whose are told and whose remain in the margins? I really enjoyed this module; it was interesting getting to hear different stories from different ethnic people. The topic of schools only teaching one-side history is a very common topic talked about today. This can create problems and suppress people of color at an early age. I almost feel dumb sometimes because before I learned more in college, I didn't know anything about the different sides of history. I've learned more about historical events in my three years at Texas State than my twelve years of grade school. I chose to go to Texas State because it's a very diverse, inclusive school and I knew I would get to learn more about different cultures. I wish more teachers made it a priority to teach more about diversity and different sides of history.  How Do We Talk About Issues that Matter? As said in Fostering Civil Discourse, "engaging in civil discourse means bringing your mind, heart, and conscience to reflective conversations on topics that matter, in ways that allow you to extend your understanding in dialogue with others." We, as society need to work on being more mindful and understanding when talking to others. We need to put all of ourselves into conversations with people on topics that matter, so we can have honest communication and hopefully learn something from them. The exchanging of ideas, perspectives, and arguments is essential for democracies and for communities to run. There are many issues that don't seem to be talked about in school because people are scared or have a lack of knowledge. Education is an art of appreciating life. The purpose of education is to provide ample opportunities for every child to flourish and grow. Through all the things students are taught should help them develop confidence and to be happy and healthy in their everyday life. School should be a safe place for students to be creative, take risks, embrace and learn from failure. They should be able to have dreams and ambitions about who they want to be in the future. School gives students the chance to learn social skills and how to work in groups, it teaches honesty and hard work. Teachers are amazing because not only are they teaching academics, but they are also teaching about lifelong lessons that help build the foundations for the future of these students.  For Educators to be able to achieve this purpose, it is necessary for communities as a whole to come together.  Introduction Blog Tiyana Johnson 1-18-22 About me: I am a junior at Texas State and I have an adorable, crazy kitten named Coconut. I really want to teach abroad and travel the world. I love to dance and swim at Canyon Lake.  Why Teach?: I was first a little interested in teaching when I was a kid because my Great Grandma and Grandpa were teachers. She would always talk about it, and tell me stories, and she had so much fun doing it. Then, when I became a freshman in high school, one day I just decided that teaching elementary students is what I wanted to do. During my junior and senior year of high school, we got the opportunity to shadow a teacher at an elementary school nearby. I choose to do it both years, I shadowed the best teachers and had amazing kids. The first year I shadowed third grade and my students begged me to move up with them and shadow fourth grade, so I did. It was an amazing experience, and I can't wait to teach my future students.
